Measure for Measure with Romola Garai (56 min)

Measure for Measure takes an astonishingly timely look at sexual morality, hypocrisy and harassment. Shakespeare asks us to "measure" the price of liberty against the moral and social cost of libertinism. It's a play about vice, the law and sexual corruption at the highest levels, and, for nearly two centuries, it was considered too racy to be produced on the English stage. Garai explains why there is no light-hearted happy ending in this play, but something much darker and more complex - truly a sexual tale for our time.

Julius Caesar with Brian Cox (56 min)

Shakespeare's Julius Caesar is a play that upholds liberty against tyranny. But what is tyranny? And who decides? Shakespeare doesn't make it simple. In order to preserve the freedom of the Roman Republic, Julius Caesar, an "over-mighty" leader, is assassinated by Roman Senators led by Caesar's friend Brutus. Caesar wanted to become an emperor. Is Brutus a traitor or a great hero and defender of liberty? Brian Cox explores how Julius Caesar is Shakespeare's "American" play, showing how easy it is for a "free" republic to fall into corruption. More than that, the play challenges us to think about who or what to trust and what values we want to live by - and to look inside and wonder how well we even know ourselves.

In this one-hour special, Rick Steves travels back a century to learn how fascism rose and then fell in Europe - taking millions of people with it. He traces fascism's history from its roots in the turbulent aftermath of World War I, when masses of angry people rose up, to the rise of charismatic leaders who manipulated that anger, and the totalitarian societies they built. In addition, Rick chronicles the brutal measures the leaders used to enforce their ideologies, and discusses the horrific consequences of genocide and total war. And yet despite all this, inspiration can be found by those who resisted. Along the way, Rick visits poignant sights throughout Europe relating to fascism, and talks with Europeans whose families lived through those times. The goal of the RICK STEVES SPECIAL: THE STORY OF FASCISM IN EUROPE is to learn from the hard lessons of 20th-century Europe, and to recognize that ideology in the 21st century.

Oct 26, 9:00pm Shakespeare Uncovered
The Winter's Tale with Simon Russell Beale (56 min)

A "winter's tale" was Jacobean slang for something fanciful and unreal - a campfire story. Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale, written during the period 1613-14, is classified as one of his late romances. This is a play driven by passion and obsession, by the uncontrollable jealousy of King Leontes, who recklessly rejects his wife's love and accuses her of an affair with his old friend. Acting like a man possessed, he orders his friend killed and his pregnant wife imprisoned. In 17th-century marriages, even royal ones, a wife believed guilty of adultery could indeed be brutally punished. The play's second half, something of an idyllic comedy despite the stark and brutal first half of the play, returns the people Leontes thought he lost through one of the greatest theatrical coups of all time, a magic trick that uses no magic. Beale shows that in this play, Shakespeare offers something for which everyone longs: to reverse time, to make amends for an irreversible mistake.

Richard III with Antony Sher (56 min)

Shakespeare's Richard III is one of the most infamous villains of all time - and one of the most relished. This episode explains how Shakespeare created both a loathsome and brilliant manipulator, as well as a real man who speaks to every age. Shakespeare's history plays are at least as much play as history. They hinge on character, on strength and on frailty, and what humans will resort to in order to achieve power. While historians still debate the merits and vices of King Richard, there is no evidence that he was the villain Tudor historians described; indeed, his reign of only two years brought some positive changes.

Educational Objectives: A wide variety of organisms produce light inside their bodies, and this light can be used for a variety of purposes. Love, laughter, loneliness - the struggle against cancer stirs the emotions in this poignant drama based on a true story. Lisa Lynch was 28 when first diagnosed with an aggressive, malignant tumor in her breast. Not exactly at the top of her list of things to do before 30. Not exactly at the top of any one's list. One minute her life was normal, then, just like that, the normality was gone forever. Told with warmth and humor, The C Word follows Lisa's journey, and the love and support she received from her devoted husband, Pete, and her family. The diagnosis is unexpected. Recently married and dreamily planning her future, she never imagined that the disease would come to dominate her life. Her only release is to write. To put all her thoughts and frustrations down in black and white. To write through her pain and come out the other side. What starts off as a blog seen by few steadily becomes a profound inspiration to many - from fellow sufferers to those caring for them. And, through it, Lisa comes to realize that her life is not defined by cancer, but by the love she inspires in others. Powerful and heartfelt, it is a no-holds-barred yet tender portrayal of the reality of living with cancer, based on Lisa's defiant words which in turn became the bestselling novel The C Word. Equally, it is a story about the power of love.

In 1940 a smoking, battle-scarred B-24 Liberator bomber known as the Tulsamerican crashed into the choppy seas off the coast of Croatia, entombing three of its occupants under 100 feat of water. For years they were lost to their world-and their families. But in 2017, seventy years after the crash, the Department of Defense discovered the plane's location and, aided by the Croatian Navy and some of the world's leading underwater archaeologists, set to work to investigate the wreckage. Were the B-24's truly as dangerous as the nickname "the Flying Coffin" suggested? And what does that mean for the recovery of the fallen airmen? Now, NOVA joins a team of archaeologists on a dangerous mission to recover the fallen airmen and identify their remains. They will deploy advanced technologies-like Cloud Point Mosaic mapping and the "Angel" dive safety system-and sift through tons of sediment to find fragments of bones and clothing and a gold wedding band. From the clandestine recovery of the remains, to the subsequent desalinization and dental forensics of the remains in the laboratory, the story of the Tulsamerican is a riveting and emotional. NOVA documents it all, including the moment a family hears the words they never expected to hear: "On behalf of a grateful nation"
