A Q&A With 8th Congressional District Candidates Dave Reichert and Tony Ventrella

October 7, 2016

Editor’s note: Since this interview was recorded, and following controversy over a newly released recording of  Donald Trump that was made in 2005, Dave Reichert has publicly rescinded his statement that he would vote for Trump, saying “Unfortunately with these comments, Donald Trump has lost my vote.” Read more here

Incumbent Dave Reichert (R)Dave Reichert

Dave Reichert is seeking a seventh term in Congress to representing Washington State’s 8th Congressional District. After redistricting in 2012, the 8th now straddles the west and east slopes of the Cascades, making it more conservative and voter-friendly for Reichert.  In a Vote 2016 interview with KCTS 9’s Enrique Cerna, the Republican incumbent talks about his decision not to endorse Republican presidential-nominee Donald Trump and the reaction he has received from Trump supporters in the district. He also talks about his Democratic challenger, Tony Ventrella. Reichert questions whether Ventrella is serious about representing the 8th district in Congress since Ventrella previously dropped out of the race and then resumed his campaign after earning a nomination in the top two for the primary vote.

Candidate Tony Ventrella (D)Tony Ventrella

Tony Ventrella is a Democrat running to unseat Republican incumbent Dave Reichert in the 8th Congressional District. Ventrella announced in April that was entering the race, saying he would not take money from a political action committee. In July, Ventrella said he was ending his bid, citing personal reasons, and encouraged his supporters to get behind the other Democrats running in the primary. After finishing in the top two in the primary, he decided to get back into the race. The popular former sportscaster talks with KCTS 9’s Enrique Cerna in a Vote 2016 interview about his unconventional bid to replace Dave Reichert and why he still believes he has a chance to win the race.

Mr. Reichert, you claim that you support Trump's 7 nation Muslim ban. I see such a policy as unconstitutional and definitively un-American. Especially seeing as how over the last 40 years there has been no genuine terrorist action from any immigrate or refugee from any of those countries. Yet, Saudi Arabia, who mirrors ISIS's ideology is a great ally who we arm to commit war crimes. How is this not contradictory to our national security? ISIS is using the ban as propaganda now.
