Vote 2016

Primary Election Breakdown

August 5, 2016

KCTS 9’s Enrique Cerna and veteran journalist and political analyst Joni Balter break down the voting results in the 7th and other major statewide races. Learn about the surprises thus far and what voters can anticipate heading into the November General Election.

Late Friday afternoon, King County Council member Joe McDermott announced he was conceding in the race for the 7th Congressional District. McDermott was in second place after the initial returns were released on Primary Election night. He fell to third place the following day as state representative Brady Piñero Walkinshaw moved into second place. Walkinshaw’s lead widened as more results were released, and it became clear that McDermott would not be able to overtake Walkinshaw.

State Senator Pramila Jayapal jumped out to an early lead and easily outdistanced the field with more than 40 percent of the vote. The top two finishers will move on to the General Election.

In an email statement, McDermott said, “I am disappointed and had deeply wanted to serve our district, I sincerely congratulate Senator Jayapal and Representative Walkinshaw on the positive and engaging primary campaign they ran.”
