Beetles Invade Portland Neighborhood

August 17, 2015

In order to control the invasive weed purple loosestrife in the Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge, the City of Portland and the USDA released the black margined loosestrife beetle several years ago. This year, the beetles seem to have eaten all the loosestrife and moved on to more prized backyard plants. Scientists at the Oregon Department of Agriculture say they have never seen anything like it.

The city and the state agriculture department are holding an open house tonight on the subject from 5pm - 7pm at the Sellwood Community Center.
