Doc Martin

The Wait Is Over! Season 8 of 'Doc Martin' Premieres in January

Doc Martin returns January 10, so what can we expect this season?

December 28, 2018

Fans of Doc Martin have been very patient over the past (ahem!) two years while we’ve waited for the new season… which is finally here! Season 8 premieres on Thursday, January 10, at 10:00 p.m. on KCTS 9. If you’re new to the series, you might wonder what all the fuss is about. A country doctor who’s hopeless with people, confused by his wife and queasy at the sight of a little blood? It all sounds pretty odd. But somehow, with Martin Clunes as the title curmudgeon, plus the fabulous ensemble cast covering the gamut of eccentric small-town characters—it all adds up to MAGIC.

Although it has an ongoing story arc, this is the kind of series you can join in the middle or enjoy an episode at a time. For those of you who are new to Doc Martin, here’s a quick recap of the story so far. Superfans can skip forward to the juicy bits about Season 8, further down the page….

In Season 1, Doctor Martin Ellingham, an eminent London surgeon, is forced to give up his career and retrain as a GP after developing a phobia to blood. He moves to Portwenn, the small village in Cornwall where he spent childhood holidays with his aunt. Although he is a brilliant surgeon, Doc Martin has trouble relating to ordinary people, and his lack of social skills and hot temper offend many of the locals. As time goes on, however, they come to appreciate him, and by the end of Season 2, he even manages to go out on a date with a local school teacher, Louisa Glasson (Caroline Catz).

Over the course of several more seasons, the Doc earns the trust—and even friendship—of Bert Large (Ian McNeice), who runs the local pub with his son; bumbling police constable Joe Penhale (John Marquez); Sally Tishell (Selena Cadell), the pharmacist who is madly in love—in all senses of the word “mad”—with the Doc; Morwenna Newcross (Jessica Ransom), the practice’s New Age medical receptionist; and Aunt Ruth (Eileen Atkins), a retired psychiatrist who understands Martin better than most. Romance also blossoms, albeit in fits and starts, with Louisa, and by Season 6 she and Martin are married with a child—although not necessarily in that order. “Happily ever after” is not really Martin’s style, and his continuing people-problems put their relationship to the test.

Fast forward to Season 8: Here’s what to expect. As the new season opens, Portwenn is abuzz as residents prepare for the wedding of everyone’s favorite constable, Joe Penhale, and his girlfriend Janice Bone (Robyn Addison). Aunt Ruth considers selling the family farm; meanwhile, Morwenna’s missionary parents arrive for a surprise visit. With baby James teething, Louisa and Martin are desperate for sleep. Finally, the whole town turns out for the annual gig race, which brings crises and celebration in equal measure. The new season also includes guest appearances from some of our favorite actors, including Art Malik (Jewel In the Crown, Upstairs Downstairs); Kevin Doyle (Downton Abbey, Happy Valley); Rebecca Lacey (Monarch of the Glen); Caroline Quentin (Jonathan Creek, Men Behaving Badly); and Sigourney Weaver (Alien; Gorillas in the Mist).

So grab a bowl of popcorn (Mom, don’t forget that Kettle Corn is our favorite, right?) and join KCTS 9 on Thursday, January 10, at 10:00 p.m. for the new season of Doc Martin.
