Chief Operating Officer

The Chief Operating Officer is a key member of the executive team and accountable to collaborate with internal leadership to define and execute the strategy of Cascade Public Media. The COO is responsible for leading the day-to-day operations of the organization to build increased audience and community engagement, data collection and analysis, and drive long-term financial sustainability.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES  

I. Leadership

1.  Collaborate with other members of the executive team to define and execute the station’s strategic and operational objectives.

2.  Contribute to and inspire a culture of operational excellence, team member creativity and innovation, and urgency to achieve

3.  Assist in developing, maintaining, and administering organizational policies and procedures

4.  Build healthy and productive relationships with key external stakeholders including community partners, other public media entities, programming producers and distributors, service vendors, and other constituents as required

5.  Model and promote exceptional leadership, communication and collaboration at all levels

6.  Actively engage with members of the Board of Directors, Community Advisory Board, and others in the governance of the organization, as needed

7.  Be a strategic and operational advisor to the President and CEO and other members of the executive team

8.  Manage special projects assigned by President and CEO

9.  Be an engaged ambassador of Cascade Public Media and build strong relationships at all levels, internally and externally

II. Management

1.  Work with third-party consultants and vendors on television program acquisition and scheduling.

2.  In concert with managers and team members, develop and execute tactical plans aligned with strategic objectives, setting and communicating clear deadlines

3.  Manage financial and organizational resources to their highest and best use, maximizing the return on team member’s time and value, and the company’s financial resources

4.  Challenge and motivate team members to achieve objectives, minimizing distractions and reducing non-strategic influences

5.  Contribute to and create a culture of innovation and collaboration among all departments, challenging team members to find more creative and efficient ways to accomplish our objectives, while supporting mistakes.

6.  Provide constant, real-time feedback to team members, building a foundation of trust.

7.  Work collaborative across departments and among team members to meet monthly, quarterly and annual goals

III. Engagement

1.  Attend and engage in Board of Directors and Committee meetings, Community Advisory Board meetings, donor and station functions, and community events as a leader representing Cascade Public Media

2.  Make speeches and presentations stating the case for support for Cascade Public Media, and articulating the strategy of the organization to various constituencies

3.  Actively circulate within Cascade Public Media, address team members in department and all staff meetings as needed

4.  Engage in industry meetings, actively representing Cascade Public Media and providing leadership to various initiatives as appropriate.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

1.  Bachelor’s Degree in broadcasting, journalism, communications, new media, business, or a related field or equivalent experience required; advanced study or a graduate degree preferred

2.  Minimum ten years’ experience in a senior-level operations role in a media or media technology company

3.  Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of traditional and new media, marketing, digital and data strategy

4.  Demonstrated success in planning, budgeting, and staff leadership; demonstrated accomplishments in working collaboratively with peers; significant experience developing and communicating strategies for content objectives, organizing and managing multiple priorities, and in developing and managing projects and budgets

5.  Demonstrated ability to hire, motivate, develop, and lead others, resolve conflicts, and ensure the achievement of results through effective performance management

6.  Experience with digital media platforms and programming approaches with new models of content creation

7.  Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to persuade and make effective presentations before external and internal audiences

8.  Experience negotiating agreements and developing/managing financial resources

9.  Excellent interpersonal skills for building and fostering key internal and external business relationships, as well as the ability to lead and perform effectively in a team-oriented environment

10. Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication skills; persuasive writing, eloquent speaking and active listening skills required

11. Ability to lead change initiatives and continuously improve campaigns, processes and systems

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1.  Ability to regularly type on a keyboard

2.  Ability to view data on a computer screen for long periods of time

3.  Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
