Sarah Bakewell with Mott Greene: What the Existentialists Can Do for Us

Tuesday, April 12, 2016

This event has expired.

Existentialism is one of the most talked-about philosophical theories and, according to author Sarah Bakewell (How to Live), its development was instrumental to every liberation movement of the 20th century. At the Existentialist Cafe is a “brilliant” biographical history of the thinkers responsible for spreading this philosophy (Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir) and its effect on freedom and justice. In conversation with science historian Mott Greene, Bakewell will explore the growth of existentialism and its central principles: authenticity, rebellion, freedom, and responsibility. As an added bonus, two local actors will read a few choice bits of writing from the philosophers in the book, to highlight the history of this philosophy.
