Print-Rich Environment

How can you make ordinary household items into playful literary experiences for children?  Participants team up to explore how engaging in simple games and activities helps children become aware of their environment and increase emergent language and literacy.

Sample Themes and Tips

  • Label everything!  Help children label their drawings and put labels on objects around your home.
  • Demonstrate reading in your daily routine.  Let children see how you use reading throughout the day by helping them notice when you read your mail, a shopping list, a TV schedule, etc.
  • Create times for reading and writing together.  Ask a relative or friend to send your child an e-mail or a letter, sing songs and read aloud every day to your child.
