Viral Vs. Virus

Sensors on asthma inhalers generate real-time maps of environmental dangers to help patients, physicians and disease detectives in Louisville, Kentucky. Street knowledge was also crucial in a historic medical breakthrough: John Snow's mapping of cholera fatalities in 19th century London. In West Oakland, California, citizens confront air pollution and rising asthma rates by collecting traffic data. Local ordinances are changed and everyone breathes easier. Can apps and maps combat globalized diseases in a warming world?

Butterfly Town, USA: S0E0

The coastal city of Pacific Grove in Monterey County, Calif. is known as "Butterfly Town, U.S.A." for the annual migration of the Monarch butterflies. The Monarch Butterfly Grove Sanctuary in the town is one of the oldest Monarch over-wintering sights in California, but in recent years their numbers have been dwindling rapidly. In 2009, the city heavily pruned branches, and gaps in the tree canopy resulted in Monarch numbers dropping from nearly 18,000 to under 800.

Shifting Sands: On the Path to Sustainability: S0E0

For more than a century, North America's giants in manufacturing (US Steel, Standard Oil and Bethlehem Steel) and preservationists battled over a 47-mile stretch of sandy shore along Lake Michigan that contains one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet-the Indiana Dunes region. While the factories provided jobs and contributed to the community's economic growth, they also wiped out a tremendous amount of rare habitat, and polluted the waterways.

Saving The Dead Sea

There's no place on Earth like it. Cleopatra attributed her beauty to its secrets. King Herod built one of the world's first health spas on its shores. And as the biblical story goes, "rocks and fire falling from the sky" buried Sodom and Gomorrah and the sea became "the sea of salt" -- The Dead Sea. Now this wonder of the world is dying. Since 1976, its level has declined by more than sixty-five feet. Its coastline is pockmarked with thousands of sinkholes. Can the Dead Sea be saved?

Knife maker Tom Maringer used his metal working skills to start engraving coins, using hand-engraved steel dies and pressing coins one at a time. Thus, Shire Post Mint was born and Tom has been minting custom coins ever since. His work caught the eye of George R. R. Martin who commissioned some coins for a new book called A Song of Fire and Ice, which became the hit HBO series "Game of Thrones." He and his family still maintains the mint, pressing, packing and shipping them all themselves, just as they would have hundreds of years ago.
