BBQ With Franklin Marathon + KCTS 9'S BBQ Staff Picks

Fire up that television this July, because KCTS 9 is having a BBQ with Franklin marathon! Barbecue professional Aaron Franklin is ready to take over your screens and your grills for a three-hour marathon of BBQ with Franklin

Prepare to master your grill with the man who can turn you into a barbecue expert to cook everything from brisket to sausage, and even a whole hog. Mark your calendars and set your DVR’s for 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, for the BBQ with Franklin marathon.

Pitmaster Aaron Franklin’s interest in barbecuing struck when he and his wife, Stacy, would host backyard cookouts for friends and family. Knowing little of the barbecue business, the couple opened a small barbecue trailer on the side of an Austin, Texas, interstate in 2009.

To this day, Franklin Barbecue has grown into the most popular and critically praised barbecue joint in the country. Open six days each week, lines of people wrap themselves around the restaurant for hours to eat his barbecue.

Franklin’s personal barbecue accolades include Texas Monthly’s Best Barbecue Joint in Texas and Bon Appétit's Best Barbecue Joint in America. Franklin most recently won the James Beard Foundation Award for Best Chef: Southwest in 2015.

For those looking to refine their barbecue bravado before the big marathon, you can watch full episodes online, and you can even view Aaron Franklin’s instructional web series as well!

The KCTS 9 staff loves to share their favorites around Washington! Read more about their favorite barbecue joints and why they love it. Let us know what you think, and tell us your favorites!

Ranch House BBQ in Olympia
Ranch House BBQ is my favorite because they have the best sauce! It is a perfect balance of spicy, sweet and smoky. The brisket and ribs are our favorite – we always stop here to fuel up or get takeout on our way to a weekend adventure on the Olympic Peninsula.

Hole in the Wall Barbeque in Seattle
The Hole is a friendly, family owned restaurant. They serve delicious slow smoked meats, award-winning chili, and great sides. There is usually something special every weekday on the menu, but you will always be treated special at the counter.

Boar’s Nest in Ballard
Easy take-out and I love the sauce! I always order the pulled pork sandwich which has coleslaw on the bun with the pork and sauce – yum!

Pig Iron in Seattle
In 21 years of living in Washington, and finding this state has a real serious lack of BBQ, Pig Iron is a shining beacon of last hope for outstanding BBQ and the sides that make it glorious.

Bitterroot in Ballard
One of the best food happy hours in Seattle!  I especially recommend the pulled pork nachos!  And you can’t go wrong with mac and cheese anyway you want it. Also, rotating whiskey flights - enough said.

Smokin Pete’s BBQ in Ballard (catering and advanced to-go orders only)
Their brisket is incredibly mouth-watering, hotlinks that will make your eyes roll back in your head, potato salad and beans that are delicious, and the sweet potato cornbread is undeniably good.  This would be great to order ahead for a group of friends or family heading to Golden Gardens for a picnic and campfire on the beach.  Oh yeah… and they have pie!
