Arthur & George on MASTERPIECE: The Game is On

Martin Clunes is at it again, this time as the legendary author and Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, in  the new MASTERPIECE series, Arthur & George.  Adapted from Julian Barnes’ acclaimed novel of the same name, the three-part series tells the true story of the case that inspired the great author to put down his pen and turn detective.

Arthur & George follows the separate but intersecting lives of two men: mild-mannered lawyer George Edalji, who is framed for a crime he may not have committed; and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the well-known author who investigates the case, which came to be known as the Great Wyrley Outrages. Infuriated by the injustice he sees, the famed author uses the methods of his own fictional detective to get to the truth.

Clunes leads the all-star cast, which includes Arsher Ali (The Missing) as George Edalji, a mixed-race solicitor living in the English Midlands; Charles Edwards (Downton Abbey) as Alfred Wood, Sir Arthur’s private secretary and real-life “Dr.Watson”; Hattie Morahan (The Bletchley Circle) as Jean Lickie, a woman who Doyle befriended while his wife was gravely ill; and Art Malik (The Jewel in the Crown) as George’s Indian father, an Anglican minister.
