Northwest Stories Part 2: Melting glaciers
National Parks
Part 1 of 3
Eighty eight percent of the fresh water in the world comes from glaciers, which are melting at an alarming rate. Geologists estimate the Northwest has lost 50 percent of glacier area in the last century -- most of it in the last 40 years. Washington’s national parks are looking lower their carbon footprint, which stands at about 30,000 tons per year for the three main parks – Mount Rainier, the Cascades and the Olympics.
