It's wonderful to hear Mark recount his stories. It was a special time when we all danced and sang in Koleda Balkan Dance Ensemble in the 1970's (some of us began in 1967). Mark was often my partner in Hungarian dances and a silent dance Vrlichko that we performed. He was a great partner even at age 14!

Later I remember weekends with Koleda at Manresa Castle in Port Townsend, where we performed on Saturday nights (after preparing and serving a Balkan dinner for the guests), then stayed overnight for Sunday rehearsal. Sara deLuis and Flemming Halby and others from First Chamber Dance Company used to come over from Fort Worden to watch our performances.

Although we didn't really talk about the "future" at that time (we were too busy living the present!), I think it was always clear that Mark was meant to dance and create.

I always love watching the performances of the Mark Morris Dance Group because I can see little glimpses of Balkan dances interspersed. It brings back memories. Mark's dance are so intimately tied to the music, it feels like a dream to watch and listen.

Thanks for the great interview!
