KCTS 9 Connects

After years of being poked and prodded in the name of science, many chimps live out their lives in small cages, suffering from loneliness and neglect. We take you inside a Cle Elum sanctuary to see the incredible work being done to rescue chimps from medical labs to give them a new home and a new future.

This organisation is taking incredible action, and I am fully behind it all. We simply must go to better efforts to treat our closest relatives with respect and kindness.

Thank you KCTS for the great report you did on the Chimp sanctuary. Chimps are continually on the verge of extinction in the wild, yet here in the U.S. they are continually bred in captivity for painful laboratory research, stolen from their mothers for the exotic pet trade, and used and abused by Hollywood animal trainers like the one in the recent Sprint phone ad[now showing before Disney's new movie "Up" at a theater near you!]The poor chimp[s] used in that ad are very likely to end up in a lab when they are no longer cute or refuse to comply with their abusive handlers. Thanks again for shining the spotlight on some very lucky chimpanzees.

This is a wonderful story! I would love to see a follow-up on Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest's work with exploited chimps in the future. What a great way to raise awareness and celebrate an organization that is making a real difference.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for doing this segment. Please keep us updated on how things are going at the Sanctuary. I would love to hear from the Director of the Sanctuary about more ways that the general public can help.

CSNW is busy with the Chimps, yet they have a daily blog, with many stories about the Chimps, plenty of pictures and videos. If you have questions, it isn't long before you have the answer. Shortly after their arrival, the Chimps appearance seemed to change overnight, their eyes began to sparkle....
CSNW has been very considerate to those of us who are on the outside looking in. I know that they appreciate every dollar that is donated.
It is important to remember those who are still in research. Please contact your state representatives, senators, governor and demand that they stop using Chimpanzees in research. They are the ones that can change the laws to protect the Chimpanzees from being exploited by entertainment, research, and human's that try to make pets out of them.
Chimp's are on the endangered specie list.
Also, "Project R&R, Release and Restitution for Chimpanzees in Laboratories" has several petitions, for the Chimpanzees, that need your signature.

Your news story was great, it was much better than the ABC World News 10-16-08 broadcast on CSNW. Your story had a personal feel to it, you provided information and shots of the chimpanzees I hadn't seen or read before. I, too, am a Chimpanzee Pal at CSNW. I also send lots of goodies and toys. This sanctuary keeps you informed via blogs and video they let us see how our contributions help, it's wonderful. Have a blessed year!

I've been donating $20 a month to the santuary automatically , which doesn't hurt at all. You could do any amount at all, $5 every month would be a big help with enough of us doing it. You get updates and videos which I really love to get. They aren't open for tours yet but they can use volunteers.
This was my major in college, years ago, and I still love them. Thank you for helping to get their stories out there.

Thank you so much for bringing the story of these chimps and the plight of many others out there to light. I hope it brings more awareness to the issue of chimpanzees in captivity, and can encourage more people to help in the process of giving them the better life that they deserve. What a wonderful thing that Keith has done, and all those who help him. Thanks again for airing the segment - I hope there will continue to be follow up stories on the topic.

I loved your segment on Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest in Cle Elum, Washington! What a great story!! Keith LaChappelle did a wonderful thing when he built this sanctuary to rescue these chimps from their decades of misery. Now they are thriving! I hope you will have follow up stories in the future on these 7 amazing chimpanzees to keep us updated on their progress. Thank you very much for bringing awareness to the plight of chimpanzees used in research and then discarded, and thank you for showing us that people can do something about it and make a difference! This is just another example of the excellent programming that KCTS9 is famous for!

Thank you for this wonderful story about a wonderful place. It is truly a miracle to watch these chimp people come into their own for the first time. We owe it to these animals, who have sacrificed so much for us human animals, to give them lives of dignity and choice, as Keith says. There are so many more chimps still stuck in barren cages because there's no place for them to go. I hope you story inspires your viewers to support Chimp Sanctuary NW so they can expand their space and their chimp family.
