Bounty of the Sound
Puget Sound Matters
The Chefs in Raingear program is run by Riley Starks of Lummi Island Wild Reefnet Salmon. This unique program allows chefs from all over the area to experience catching, preparing and eating wild Fraser River Salmon. The program takes place mid-July to mid-September depending on the salmon runs. Participants spend the day reefnet fishing and they prepare their catch for an evening salmon feast at the nearby Willows Inn. Reefnet fishing is unique in that it creates a selective and sustainable harvest of fish. Reefnetters wait for the salmon to come into their nets and they are able to avoid catching and killing unwanted species. Sustainable seafood is a seafood stock whose population is properly managed with a steady or increasing population health. Sustainable fishing considers the long-term affect of harvest and does not disrupt the structure of the ecosystem. This program gives participants a unique appreciation of the importance of sustainable fishing in Puget Sound which is good for the seafood stocks and for the health of the Sound.
