Sep 25, 4:00am D-Day 360
(55 min)

This program charts the vital statistics behind D-Day. It asks what it took to launch the greatest invasion in history. The film examines the numbers behind the operation taking in everything from strategy to logistics; probability analysis to operational decisions. It conveys the enormous scale of the operation through innovative visualization, such as LiDAR scanning of the Normandy beaches which is accurate enough to be used as forensic data by the police. These include the defenses above and below ground which means that an accurate 3D model of the invasion will be able to be built. For example, over 5,000 ships delivered 30,000 military vehicles and 160, 000 soldiers onto the beaches. Although there was 80 miles of coastline to aim for, only 5 miles of beach could be landed on and once on shore the men and machines had to pass through the eye of a needle -- a series of narrow exits whose total width measured 80 yards.

Belief & Practice: Amidah Prayer - The Amidah is the central prayer in the Jewish tradition recited three times a day, and on Shabbat and holidays. Asteroids, Meteors, and Meteorites - Sean is determined to beat his mystery competitor at a video game of "Astro-Tracker." Worried at first, Sean learns that only the rare asteroid (called a meteorite) makes it all the way to Earth, so he decides that he'll become really good at "Astro-Tracker" to prepare for the future when he can be on a team of scientists who track rogue asteroids. Curriculum: Asteroids are small solar system bodies that orbit the Sun. Asteroids are similar to comets but do not have a visible coma (fuzzy outline and tail) like comets do. The kids conduct a series of tests to find out and amazingly the rock passes each test. In the end, a DSA scientist confirms that Mindy's rock actually isn't a meteor... but, wait, the random rock Mindy's sitting on is! Curriculum: Meteorites are pieces of space rocks (asteroids) that break up when they hit the Earth's atmosphere and fall in small pieces. Curious George Ramps It Up - Hundley takes it upon himself to return the toy a baby dropped in his lobby. But when George sees Hundley racing down the street with the toy in his mouth, George thinks he wants to play, and this delays Hundley. Hundley is not happy to see the baby drive off in a bus sans toy and is even more upset when Gnocchi, who wants in on the fun, grabs the toy and disappears through Pisghetti's basement window. George and Hundley follow Gnocchi into the basement, only to have the door lock behind them. Uh-oh. George and Gnocchi can climb up and out the window, but Hundley can't. George comes to the rescue by constructing a ramp leading to the window that even the littlest Daschund legs can climb. Now they just need to figure out where that baby went.

(26 min)

On January 28, 1963, a young black man from Charleston named Harvey Gantt enrolled at Clemson College, making him the first African American accepted to a white school in South Carolina. The absence of drama or violence surrounding Gantt's enrollment - the result of nearly two years of detailed preparation and planning on the part of college administrators, state politicians and business leaders - made headlines at the time, but soon it faded from the public consciousness. Narrated by Tony-winning actor Phylicia Rashad, THE EDUCATION OF HARVEY GANTT tells this pivotal, yet largely forgotten, story of desegregation. Interviews with Gantt, distinguished scholars and civil rights veterans, and archival footage and reenactment illuminate the events leading up to Gantt's enrollment, the unfolding of entrance day and the impact of Clemson's integration on the state and the nation.

That's what it's like for the 67 moons of Jupiter. Curriculum: Kids may think that a planet would only have one moon, maybe two. But the larger outer planets, the gas giants, have many moons - Jupiter and Saturn leading the count with more than 60 moons each! What's more, the moons of Jupiter are not all just round, gray rocks - they are extremely varied, from volcanic Io, covered with volcanic activity; to Europa, with an icy surface covering an underground ocean; to Ganymede, a moon so large it's actually bigger than the planet Mercury! "Project Pluto" - When Mindy is excited about presenting her kid model of Pluto for school show and tell, the other kids don't want to disappoint her by breaking the news to her that Pluto is not a planet. Penwyllt - Part 2 (48 min)

High in the hills above Aberystwyth, the body of an unidentified young man is found at the bottom of a lake in a disused quarry near the village of Penwyllt. Tommy James who's business is tractors, lorries and trucks is a very prominent member of the close-knit community as are his close friends local publican Dic Rees and garage owner Gwilym Morgan. Naturally wary of strangers, the trio offer Mathias no obvious leads, but when the body is revealed to be ex-teacher and traveller Michael Reynolds whom everyone in the village seems to have had an affection for, tongues start to loosen. Does ex-convict and loner Wyn Bratton hold the key to uncovering the truth? And will Bratton's lonely life in a caravan in the woods and the obvious parallels that it draws to Mathias' own life threaten the detective's ability to decide whether he's the victim or the killer? Who was Dic Rees' wife Lowri having an affair with? Bratton or Reynolds? Did Dic know about it? And what was the link between the two men and Tommy James' 10 year old son Defi? When Gwilym Morgan's apparent suicide in his own garage turns out to be murder and Michael Reynolds is found to have drowned not in the quarry lake but somewhere much closer to home, who can Mathias really trust? In a community that lives by its own rules, what price silence if brother turns against brother and the innocent pay the price? Mathias for one knows the answer.

They get help from Carrot and Celery, who fly them to each one, and Sean gets to walk on them. Curriculum: The gas giants Jupiter and Saturn each have around 60 moons - each of them unique. As they learn about what a black hole really is, Mitchell discovers that science holds enough mysteries to keep him busy for many years. (26 min)

VISA DREAM tells the touching story of one family's experience gaining entry into the United States. Representatives from the U.S. Consulate demystify the visa process and illuminate the reasons why they approve some applications - and deny others. The film's main characters are Ramon and Aurora Chavez, an elderly couple living in Jalisco, Mexico, who have not seen their children in 16 years. They are a family divided, connected only by photo albums and phone calls. The daughters may not visit Mexico because they do not possess the necessary documents; going there would mean forever leaving behind their spouses, children, homes and lives. One daughter tearfully explains the hardships many immigrant families endure as a result of this prolonged separation. Ramon, the patriarch of the family, would rather live in Mexico but he longs to reunite with his family, who live 2,500 miles away in Los Angeles. In order to visit, they must secure a tourist visa, an expensive and difficult proposition. Previous attempts proved unsuccessful but the Chavezes decide to try again after years of postponement. A camera crew follows them step-by-step through the application process, which begins at the U.S. Consulate two hours away in Guadalajara. There, visa document specialists and a U.S. Consulate officer describe their roles, detail the reasons why certain individuals receive visas while others do not and explain what their interview questions aim to reveal. VISA DREAM's closing moments capture the tension as the family eagerly awaits the results of the interview. Jubilant scenes follow as the family responds with shock, tears and excitement when they hear the decision. The film concludes with Ramon and Aurora's first trip to California and the heartwarming reunion with their children and grandchildren.
