We the people voted against the tunnel, period.
The governor and mayor, 2 people, decided they
want it...so here it comes...it should be against the law to do what they are doing. No wonder so many people have lost faith in our governmental system..we vote, we are heard and we are ignored...what a shame.

Hanford is a complicated mess. Not just because of the huge volumes of contained and uncontained radioactive and chemical waste but also because of the messy bureaucratic process that is controlling the cleanup. Money is often ineffectively and inefficiently spent, a long-cultivated culture of secrecy silences important warning calls from within the complex, and safety is frequently pushed aside for cost-effectiveness at the expense of worker health.
Short-sighted hiring and training practices have left Hanford with an ageing workforce who hold precious knowledge about the site. This knowledge will leave as these workers retire. We are not prepared for the long haul.
This is not to say that there are not individuals within the system who are trying to make a difference and improve things. There are. However, the system I think, is too broken to be fixed. We need a different approach that puts worker health and safety first and values people who speak up about mismanagement and safety problems. This requires a HUGE attitude and work-practice shift.
Perhaps a cleanup commission created with an explicit nuclear waste cleanup mission would be a good first step.
