Dear Emily,
I think it's hard to write sometimes, especially when we REALLY have something to say. Thank you for being strong and writing anyway. I am glad that you remember the things about John that are important to you. Keep listening to your heart as you continue to write.
Love, Aunt Terri

Dear Emily,
You did such a wonderful job writing this story about neighbor John. Thank you for sharing your experiences about John, it made us think about all the friends, family members and pets that we miss, too. The illustrations fit perfectly with the story. John was a very special neighbor. We can't wait to see you read this story aloud on Reading Rainbow.
Love,
Mrs. DenAdel's Class

Dear Emily,
I am proud of you for putting your feelings into a story. That is sometimes hard to do. Also, you have courage. When we are scared or afraid of something (like seeing John with his oxygen tubes and in the hospital bed), you overcame your fear and had the courage to do something wonderful for John and for yourself.
I knew John a little bit but know he was a special man and had a giving heart. His daughter, Joyce, is a close friend of mine and she sent me your story. I'm glad she did. I think you are a special girl. I can see that John felt that way about you, too.
I hope you always have a tender heart and are always brave in putting your feelings and ideas into words.
Mrs. Monroe

Dear Emily.
Thank you for writing this story. It makes me smile and cry but is such a nice tribute to a wonderful man. I miss his booming laugh too. Thanks for sharing your memories. You are special! Love, Joyce

I was just browsing the winning entries and I was very moved by this story. My son finished reading the story out loud. Life is certainly a journey, and our children are just starting out on it. Emily has captured a profound life experience that probably makes us all take a moment to reflect on those people who enrich our lives. I hope in a cosmic way John feels this story.
