Design Director

As the design director for Cascade Public Media you will own the visual identities and architecture of our brands. You are a hands-on multimedia design professional who can also lead a team in the creation and maintenance of a consistent, vibrant visual identity for all communication platforms to reach more people, build a great organization and inspire a smarter world.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

I. Lead

1. Develop, champion and maintain a strong visual language and design strategy for Cascade Public Media and its brands (KCTS9, Crosscut.com and What’s Good 206)

2. In partnership with the Director of Marketing & Communications, formalize Cascade Public Media’s style guide, train all staff, and uphold brand standards

3. Build, mentor and influence a team of in-house designers and outside vendors to pursue excellence in the creation of multimedia graphics for broadcast, web, print and event materials

4. Creatively build design solutions that delight internal clients and stakeholders

5. Lead the creative development process and execution of the monthly print Viewer Guide by providing layout and visual guidance in addition to hands-on design as needed

6. Create design materials, and provide visual guidance to community and donor engagement teams in support of events including environmental signage, printed handouts, gifts and giveaways.

II. Manage

1. Maintain an effective workflow of projects through the department to deliver on commitments on-time, on budget while adhering to established Cascade Public Media Standards

2. Design and maintain internal environmental signage that keeps our mission fresh, vibrant and always present for teams and visitors

3. Purchase and direct creative services from outside contractors, printers, and other vendors

III. Collaborate

1. Work with various Cascade Public Media departments and producers to create and maintain a consistent brand identity across all platforms

2. Design the organization’s annual report in collaboration with key internal stakeholders

3. Work with the creative and content teams to imagine and create set designs for promotional campaigns and content initiatives

4. Manage effective relationships with all Cascade Public Media peers

IV. Administer

1. Create and manage Design Department budget and resources

2. Ensure work orders are correct and activities are properly charged to project budgets

EDCUATION AND EXPERIENCE 

1. Bachelor’s Degree in graphic design or a related field or equivalent experience

2. Ten years’ experience as a designer, including three years of supervisory experience, required

3. Three years’ experience as a broadcast/media designer including motion graphic design required

4. Possess the ability to set and meet deadlines in a fast-paced working environment without substituting quality or accuracy

5. Must display professionalism and be able to relate well with all levels of the organization

6. Must be passionate about design, color concepts, typography, hierarchy and flow

7. Knowledge of print, broadcast, online and digital design required

8. Knowledge of nonlinear editing preferred

9. Working knowledge of AfterEffects, Photoshop Illustrator and InDesign required; experience with additional Adobe Creative Suite software preferred

10. Strong knowledge of typography required

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Working knowledge of the Macintosh platform required

2. Ability to work at a computer using keyboard and mouse for long periods of time

3. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds

4. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
