Real questions and real answers for parents having conversations with their kidsabout puberty and sex. Learn from local experts, Metzger and Lehman, how toguide your child on their journey through adolescence.

Puberty can be a challenging and frustrating time for many children and their parents. Not only are their bodies undergoing a total transformation, so are their brains and their attitudes on everything—from school to sex. Navigating this period need not be as daunting as one might think and ParentMap is delighted to host long-time sex-educators Julie Metzger, RN and Rob Lehman, MD to discuss this formative period of a child’s life. Metzger and Lehman answer real questions about all aspects of puberty and sex; no matter how embarrassing or taboo. From bras to body hair, they will talk in a language that is easy to understand, offering a comfortable, straightforward approach to how to best help your child through the triumphs and tribulations of puberty.

For 20 years Metzger and Lehman have been educators of a well-known puberty class they teach at Seattle Children’s Hospital. They also give lectures and workshops through their widely successful program, Great Conversations. Metzger’s professional and clinical experiences include managing a pediatric unit, teaching pediatric nursing, and facilitating projects at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Lehman has managed and practiced at teen clinics in a variety of settings, including public health, specialty referral, homeless teen clinics, reproductive health, incarcerated youth, college youth, and special projects involving youth with disabilities. He is currently serving on the Seattle STD/HIV Prevention Training Center Advisory Board and is a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Washington.

Metzger and Lehman are eagerly anticipating the release of their first book on this topic, Will Puberty Last My Whole Life?: REAL Answers to REAL Questions from Preteens About Body Changes, Sex, and Other Growing-Up Stuff. It is a flip book for boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 12 that has questions asked by girls in one half of the book; flip it over and questions asked by boys are on the other side. The book contains honest, informative, and reassuring answers to questions pre-adolescents have about puberty, friends, feelings, sex, pimples, babies, body hair, menstruation, bras, and much more.
