Fred Martinez was a male-bodied person with a feminine nature, a special gift according to his ancient culture. But the place where two discriminations meet is a dangerous place to live. Martinez was one of the youngest hate-crime victims in modern history when he was brutally murdered at 16. Two Spirits explores the life and death of a boy who was also a girl, and the essentially spiritual nature of gender.

This screening event is part of the In the Spirit exhibit opening festival beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 16, 2011 at Washington State History Museum. The exhibit opening features an awards ceremony and celebration in honor of the sixth annual In the Spirit: Northwest Native Arts Exhibition.

Two Spirits will air June 28, 2011 at 10:00 p.m. on the Emmy Award-winning PBS series Independent Lens on KCTS 9.
