Oscar Hijuelos was born of Cuban parentage in New York City in 1951, has taught at Hofstra and Duke Universities and is the author of eight novels translated into more than twenty-five languages. His most recent novel, Beautiful Maria of My Soul, was selected as a Top 10 of 2010 by Kirkus Reviews and is a sequel to his 1990 Pulitzer Prize winning, The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love, that was adapted for the film The Mambo Kings in 1992 and as a Broadway musical in 2005. He is also the recipient of the Rome Prize and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation.
