National Geographic Live! Secrets Of Shangri-La with Peter Athans

Tuesday, April 14, 2009 - 7:30pm

7:30 p.m.
Benaroya Hall
200 University Street
Seattle, WA 98109

KCTS 9 and National Geographic Live invite you to hear mountaineer and cinematographer Peter Athans speak about his discovery and exploration of a remarkable Tibetan site.
Peter Athans
In a subterranean chamber, 14,000 feet up, they found a gigantic 55-panel mural from the 13th century depicting important Buddhist sages and 11th-century Tibetan manuscripts. The discovery suggested a gathering place for a religious community—perhaps the sort of meditative, self-sufficient community that inspired the myth of Shangri-la.

Concerned that the attention they had brought to this previously inaccessible site might pose a threat to its masterpieces, Athans and Coburn returned in 2008 with a multidisciplinary team to properly document, study, and begin to preserve the treasures.
