Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide is a PBS documentary film and national broadcast event (airing October 1-2) inspired by the widely acclaimed book of the same name by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. Filmed in 10 countries, the film follows Kristof and celebrity activists on a journey to tell the stories of inspiring, courageous individuals.

Across the globe, oppression is being confronted, and real, meaningful solutions are being fashioned through health care, education and economic empowerment for women and girls. Learn more at halftheskymovement.org.

Community partners include Island GreenTech, Voice of Vashon and The Vashon Theatre. The speaker will be Priscilla Schleigh, owner of local island shop Giraffe, which features work fairly traded from over 175 artisan groups in 50 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Running time is 45 minutes plus discussion.
