Joan Miro: The Ladder of EscapeShowing at 02-22-2014 4:30 AM on KYVE 47
Joan Miro, born in Barcelona in 1893, was influenced by Dada, surrealism, and abstract expressionism and passionately committed to his native Catalonia and its struggle for independence from Spain. That struggle led to the Spanish Civil War in 1936 and the crushing of Catalonia's hopes by fascist troops under the command of General Francisco Franco. With archival footage and passages from Miro's diaries, journals, and interviews, the film illustrates how his sensibility was shaped by the tensions between his anguished responses to a world gone mad in the 33 years of Franco's dictatorship and the horrors of World War II, and a desire to escape into a purely personal world of creativity. As the film reveals, this tension drove Miro's art in strange and beautiful ways.
