Welcome to The Savory 6 – a weekly column featuring six weekly questions for one of the guests on our show. Check, Please! Northwest is all about dining out, but that’s not the only thing that happens at the table. When you put three strangers together and encourage banter, anything can happen! It’s a happy byproduct of the show and it’s one of my favorite parts – getting to know all of these food-loving folks. In this weekly article, we get to dig a little deeper into one of our guest’s culinary quirks and preferences.
This week, we welcome back Jeremy Baker from our very first show this season. Jeremy was a super charming guest and a really enthusiastic eater – a great combination in a person if you ask me! Since he came into the studio, we’ve connected on Facebook and exchanged some great recommendations on MORE Northwest restaurants to try. Food friends are pretty rad.

How often do you dine out?
Michelle and I dine out 3 – 4 times per month. We have a broad mix of places we like to go, from fine cuisine to pub food, from fancy special occasion places to almost grab n' go, from old familiars to places we've never been before. Once in a while we stray off the path and regret our choice. Our ears are always peeled for a new recommendation, and good luck getting out of a conversation with us without hearing about our favorite places!
Fill in the blank: If I see ___________ on a menu, I HAVE to order it.
FOIE GRAS. I HAVE to order it. The first time I had foie gras was during our first trip to Maui a few years ago. It was one of those picture postcard experiences. Michelle and I had just arrived off the plane, it was Valentine's Day, and we made reservations in advance in order to get a good table. We sat overlooking the evening sea. It was a gorgeous sunset, there was a rainbow on the horizon, and whales were cresting the waves in the distance. I had never had foie gras before and it was on the menu as a garnish over a beautiful steak and lobster combo. It was heaven! So now I order it whenever I see it.
What is your signature dish - something you make well and consistently?
My signature dish qualifies me for the remedial sad sack cooking table discussion. Scrambled eggs. I'm a far better dining companion than I am a cook. (My wife approves this message.)
Do you have a morning ritual & what is it?
My morning ritual involves brewing and steeping a fresh pot of loose leaf tea. I favor the darker teas rather than the fruity or flowery. A perfect morning for me is a toasted bagel with cream cheese and a steaming cup of tea with crème and sugar.
Most awesome and annoying food trends?
Most awesome trend: alternative proteins that you don't find often, such as rabbit, duck, quail, buffalo, elk, etc. Most annoying: massive portions. There are a few places I like to go that pile on the food and I enjoy it, but on the whole, I'm against the practice. I find the best dishes are a little undersized, leaving you wanting more, which then leads you perfectly into devouring the next dish.
If you were stuck on a deserted island and only had ONE food with you, what would it be?
Sushi. There are so many different types and flavor profiles based on the fish used. After eating through my sushi staples on the island, I would plant little sushi trees all over and make a sushi paradise.
