KCTS 9 and SIFF are pleased to announce that Big Joy: The Adventures of James Broughton—directed by Northwest filmmakers Eric Slade and Stephen Silha—is the winner of the second annual Reel NW Award, presented to a distinguished feature-length film with Pacific Northwest connections appearing in the 2013 Seattle International Film Festival.
Big Joy is a vibrant and joyful documentary chronicling the life of experimental filmmaker and poet James Broughton from the mid-century San Francisco renaissance and counterculture to his death in 1999. Broughton crafted a mantra—“Follow your own weird”—which he embodied for decades. Saluted as the “father of West Coast experimental cinema,” Broughton was also a celebrated poet and writer, publishing 23 books of poetry and prose which earned him the title of “unofficial poet laureate of San Francisco.” Filmmakers Silha and Slade explore Broughton’s life, work, and impact, giving the film narrative by utilizing Broughton’s own words, poetry and film clips.
