Broadway Play Frost/Nixon at the Paramount Theatre

On April 21st, a tweet beeped onto my cell phone from Broadway Across America in Seattle:

"Don't forget, Frost/Nixon tx-$19.77 for ALL tickets! (Cuz the int. was in 1977. See, we're clever like that :-)."

The message and the nostalgic $19.77 price was a promotion for the upcoming run of the award-winning Broadway play Frost/Nixon at the Paramount Theatre (May 6-10).

The original Tony-nominated play, written by Peter Morgan and based on the legendary 1977 television interview between British talk-show David Frost and a post-Watergate Richard Nixon, enjoyed a remarkable run of 335 sold-out shows in London and New York between 2006 and 2007. In 2008, Ron Howard adapted Morgan’s script into film, bringing the dramatic and unlikely interview to the mainstream.

Broadway Across America’s production of Frost/Nixon stars stage and screen actor Stacy Keach (whom the Dallas Morning News heralds as a “sheer talent” in the role) as former president Richard Nixon, and British-born actor Alan Cox as David Frost.

Although the ticket price of $19.77 (now for select tickets only) may bring you back to 1977, other political parallels may do the same. In 1977, Nixon had Vietnam; in 2007, Bush had Afghanistan and Iraq, wars that continue today. In 1977, people fought for civil rights; now we fight for immigration rights and gay rights. And then, as now, Americans must re-evaluate the role of the press in holding leaders accountable for their actions.

Who will be the 21st century David Frost? Who will posterity rank as the 21st century Richard Nixon? Only time and maybe a play will tell.
