Inauguration Day Thoughts

No matter what your political affiliation, it’s hard not to feel the excitement of this day. People will remember where they were today for many years to come.

Personally, I never thought I would live long enough to see a person of color become President. It is wonderful to see it happen. And to have the inauguration take place one day after the national holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther Jr. makes it even more special.

On Monday, I heard a young boy say in a ceremony marking the holiday that Dr. King walked so Barack Obama could run. How appropriate and, oh, so true.

For me this is just part of the dream coming true. The dream is a work in progress. Racism and injustice still exist. We still have a lot of work to do.

The inauguration and the parade that followed were uplifting. Seeing that sea of people on hand despite the chilly temperatures was an incredible sight. But I have to admit to feeling some nervousness when the President and his wife got out of their motorcade to walk a bit of the parade route. I’m sure the Secret Service was none too happy.

Here at KCTS 9, people crowded around television sets to watch the coverage. People were quiet and serious as they listened to his speech. His words were sobering. He laid out the challenges facing us and they are many. But right now, there is a strong sense of hope.

It will be interesting to see if that hope can be turned into real results. That, I think, is what we all are hoping will happen and soon -- no matter what your political leanings may be.

Good luck Mr. President.
